Playing cards make for wonderful building materials. Here are some games that will entertain your child and build his or her fine dexterity.

Start out with some basic forms.

A teepee is easy, and can be turned into a square by propping cards up against the open ends, tilted at a slight angle, and placing two additional cards at the ends of the two new cards.

Your child will quickly see how delicately the cards must be placed and how easily a house of cards will tumble .

Don’t breathe too hard – you might undo an afternoon’s work!

Once your child gets the hang of card architecture, suggest that he or she make a multi-story building. Other challenges include making a corridor of cards or a bridge.
