Homonyms are words that sound the same, but are really different. Here’s some fun that will improve your children’s word and spelling skills at the same time.
In this game, you give clues to your child about the two homonyms you’re thinking of … and see if he or she can guess the words!
Here are some examples:
“I’m thinking of a word that describes what a bandage helps do for a cut and the back of your foot.” (Heal/heel.)
“I’m thinking of a word that’s a letter and a drink.” (T /tea.)
“I’m thinking of a word that has to do with the post office and with people who aren’t women.” (Mail/male.)
Here are some more to get your game started.
Ant/aunt
Bored/board
Bear/bare
Beat/beet
Hole/whole
Meet/meat
Reel/real
Rose/rows
Sea/see
Two/too
Use/ewes
Way/weigh
And you can even add the spelling of these words into the game. I know that from playing this game in our family that it has made a huge difference to our children’s word knowledge and spelling skills.
