Instructions:
At some point, kids enjoy learning about the network of relationships that makes up their family. They’re fascinated and comforted to learn how they fit into the scheme of things, too.
Give your child a large sheet of paper and crayons or markers.
Show your child where to draw boxes for various relatives, starting at the top with the oldest living generation. (You might want to use different colors for your side and your spouse’s side of the family.)
Sound out the names for pre-writers who can write letters, but let older kids write in the family names themselves.
To make the tree more detailed, affix photos of the various people to their names on the tree.
If you have enough space on the paper, you might want to write a brief story about each family member; encourage your child to compose as many of the stories as he or she can.
You’ll probably find this activity a good opportunity to explain such elusive concepts as grandparents, cousins, aunts, uncles, and second cousins twice removed.
