An Arts and Crafts Activity
Even people who claim to be “geographically illiterate” have no problem describing the physical shape of Italy.
Materials Required:
- Paper
- Pen or pencils
- Map for tracing
Instructions:
Even people who claim to be “geographically illiterate” have no problem describing the physical shape of Italy.
That’s because Italy looks like a boot, and a boot is a little easier to remember than some more abstract shape. We call this the “boot principle.”
With a little imagination, you and your child can make other parts of the world memorable and unique – by applying the boot principle.
In short, that principle is to make an abstract shape memorable by finding some way in which it resembles a common object.
Trace a state or country outline for your child, then ask him or her what the shape looks like.
When you settle on an appropriate object, pass out the crayons and have your child make the new association a reality.
Our research has shown that Indiana is actually an old man with a beard,
Florida is a bent sock, and Nevada is a baseball diamond’s home plate-broken in half.
