An Arts and Crafts Activity
Your children make their own mystery tracks in snow or dirt – and then lead an expedition to track the elusive animal.
Materials Required:
- Scrap wood or Styrofoam
- Strap material
- Cutting implements (for adult use only
You can create footprint makers out of all sorts of scrap materials. Sheets of Styrofoam or pieces of plywood work quite well.
Draw a pattern on paper; consider webbed feet, feet with exaggerated toes or claws, feet with pads, or just your own customized silly clodhoppers. If you want to get really fancy, go to the library and look at a nature guide. Cut out the footprint (remembering that cutting is a grownup activity), and then fashion two straps made out of leather, string, or some elastic material. The straps are used to hold the footprint maker to your child’s shoes or boots. Don’t make the footprints too big, or your child won’t be able to walk in them safely. (Of course, you should be sure to keep your child away from stairs and other hazards.)
Next step: Hitting the great outdoors.
For groups of kids, one child can play the track maker, and the rest can be the trackers.
