Instructions:

Remember dressing up in your parents’ clothes when you were a child? Didn’t it make you feel strong and proud to wear Dad’s jacket or hat, Mom’s purse or high heels?

Encourage your kids to do the same, and prompt them to talk about who they are.

For example, suggest that they describe what Mom and Dad do at work, how they relax, how they treat each other, their kids, and their friends, and how they behave around the house, etc.

Now switch roles – put on one of your kid’s hats, and act out your child in various situations: happy and sad, serious and clowning, and so on.

Beyond the entertainment aspect, this kind of role playing is a terrific way to get at difficult or touchy issues.

You’ll learn things about yourself that you can’t see during your everyday role as parent.

Kid stuff, grown up stuff – when you get right down to it, isn’t it all a matter of what hat you wear?
