An Indoor Play Activity

  • Your time only

Instructions:

Did you ever play the old childhood favorite, Grandmother’s Button Box? If not, this will fill a hole in your past.

Here’s how to play the game with one or more kids.

The first person says, “I went to my grandmother’s button box and I found a hat (or some other object).”

The next person then says, “I went to my grandmother’s button box and found a hat and (another object).”

The next person adds an object to the previous items until the sequence gets too hard to remember.

Have older children keep the sequence alphabetical for an added twist.

(“I found an airplane ticket,” ” … a bag full of ribbons,” “… a carrot, ” and so on.)

A variation on the game is to have the children think of a pocket instead of a button box.

This is similar to the old folk’s tale about the mitten full of animals in the forest: “My pocket is oh so heavy because it holds hippopotamus.”

The next person then adds his or her contribution to the pocket – and play proceeds until no one can remember the whole list, the pocket gets too full, or the giggles get too loud.

Some of these older children’s play activities are great because they’ve stood the test of time and brought fun and enterainment to generations of children.
