Children’s Activity 47: FlipBook

An Indoor Play Activity

Did you ever play with a “flip book” as a child? Flipping the book one way and the other makes an image go forwards and backwards.

Materials Required:

  • Index cards
  • Crayons or markers

Instructions:

Did you ever play with a “flip book” as a child? Flipping the book one way and the other makes an image go forwards and backwards.

Cut a number of index cards in two.

Now decide on a theme, such as a ball bouncing, an airplane taking off, or a bird flying in the sky – whatever interests your child.

Next, successively draw the moving objects in slightly different positions on the pages of the book.

For example, if you’re using the bouncing ball theme, start the ball in the upper corner of the picture on the first page.

Draw a line at the bottom of the page, as well as on all the rest of the pages.

With each page, draw the ball a little closer to the line, until it hits the floor and then bounces up again.

Now, have your child decorate a cover.

Staple the pages and cover on the left side, putting the first picture in the back and the last in the front.

Flip the book forwards and backwards, and the ball or whatever object you choose will magically appear to move.

Next time around, let your child try the drawing part.

Who knows-this could be the beginning of a great career as an animator!
