An Arts and Crafts Activity
There’s no need to wait until your child is of driving age for this activity.
Materials Required:
- Cardboard box
- Markers, crayons
Optional Materials:
- Lids from plastic containers
- Paper plates
- Pot lid
- Brads
- Cake rack
Instructions:
Find a cardboard box about two and a half feet long and a foot and a half wide and deep.
Close and seal the top and bottom of the box with tape.
Cut a large hole in one side, about midway along the length, and big enough for your child to fit through-this is now the bottom.
Next, cut a door on the other side, hinged toward the front. Fold it forward; this is the dashÂboard. Tape it to the hood.
Finally, cut two hand holes, one on each side of the car, midway down the length of the box and about three inches from the top. The slits should be about two inches long, and an inch high.
Affix four paper plates to the sides for wheels.
Now have your child decorate the box.
You and your child can either draw gauges and buttons or affix plastic container lids to the dash with brads (tape the pointed ends for safety).
Cut an X-shaped hole in the dashboard, then push the knob on a pot lid through the hole-the lid will become a moving steering wheel.
Make up a license plate, use lids for lights, and a find an old cake rack for a grill.
Have your child step into the box, then grasp the sides by the pairs of hand holes and lift. Start your engine!
